Welcome to the New Directions Movement, NDM website, a rank and file caucus within the UAW.NDM's purpose is to strengthen the UAW from within by building an educated, unified movement of rank and file UAW members. To fight for a greater share of internal democracy and leadership accountability for the rank and file membership, in the workplace and in our union.
NDM exists to promote maximum income security, job security, and improved working conditions for UAW members and their families, and to fight for justice, equality and a full share in union self-government for every UAW member.
We do not advocate secession from the International, nor do we advocate dual unionism in any form whatsoever.
What NDM Stands For
A quick study of the labor movement since NDM's inception in 1985 would indicate NDM predicted many of the problems we face today.
Not only are rank and file members facing a destruction of solidarity and decreased union democracy, but many are currently living under two-tier wage structures and have already made steep healthcare concessions. GM has promised an agenda in 2007 including possible pension and healthcare cuts for all UAW members. Though Gettlefinger has said NO to reopening of contracts, that has not stopped restructuring techniques, a product of cooperation designed to strip worker benefits. Now more than ever we must unite to preserve and build solidarity, to prepare for the future, and to hold firm to what we have. Now more than ever we need New Directions.
In keeping with our tradition as reform advocates, New Directions, with its voice for the people, and strong belief in responsibility, truth and justice to the working-man, believe it is again an era in which our voices should loudly rise.
New Directions believes that unless UAW members again band together for a common good, we will see the destruction of not only our wages and benefits, but also our dignity.
New Directions, with its national emphasis, has historically addressed issues that threaten the existence of UAW members across the country. We have historically suggested alternative approaches, submitted resolutions, and have banded with workers across the country for actions and reform.
Our current issues concern healthcare, wages, pension, working conditions, mandatory overtime, IPS pattern contracts, and loss of jobs.
We welcome the involvement of all union members to revitalize and fight for the interests of all labor workers across the country. Please see our suggested platforms.
