Delphi Rank and File Fight Back

New Directions is very concerned with recent developments in the labor movement. The drama unfolding at Delphi will have ramifications for other IPS members, the big three and the auto industry as a whole.

These announcements have not settled easily with labor at large, but at particular and immediate risk are Delphi workers, who will, without direct action, and support of fellow workers, feel the brunt of a strategic and precise attack against them.

Some Delphi-UAW members are planning special rank and file meetings to inform and educate fellow workers, and conduct open discussions regarding options and opportunities. Such meetings will be led by the rank and file, for the rank and file. Delphi workers hope to come together in solidarity and unity to analyze the crisis and discuss among themselves reasonable solutions and strategic actions.

New Directions encourages all rank and file UAW members, wherever they work, to join with Delphi workers in their quest to understand the conditions they face, to examine possible solutions, and take action. Voting yes to an agreement riddled with problems and attacks against the working class is not in our best interest.

We encourage all Delphi locals to plan information meetings and community events. If you would like more information on how to organize a rank and file meeting in your area please contact staysolid@yahoo.com.

Following you will find events taking place throughout the nation regarding the Delphi situation. We encourage all to attend!

Rank and File Meeting for UAW Members   Concerned about their Future

UAW Local 1231 Union Hall

4629 Alpine N.W.

Comstock Park, MI  49321

       Sunday, November 6

2 - 5pm.

Let’s meet, exchange ideas, and formulate a strategy of action to defend our interests.  Together we have the power to demand the respect we deserve.

What can we do? Should we strike? Should we try an inside strategy? Shall we roll over and play dead?

There is no one answer that fits all locations. We don’t assume to know what the right answer is, but together we can determine the best course of action for our locations and our circumstances. Together, we can fight and win.

All active and retired UAW members are welcome, whether they work for Delphi or another automotive company. We appreciate all the input and support we can get. Some of the old timers may be able to guide us with the wisdom of their experience. Some of the young workers may be able to guide us with energy and enthusiasm.

This meeting is of the people, by the people, for the people. This meeting will not be commandeered by an International appointee, or local union official. We are all leaders.

Other meetings are being planned in Kokomo, Indiana and other locations.

All rank and file UAW members are welcome. Sponsored by the rank and file donations.

Other UAW Delphi Activism Opportunities:

On Tuesday, November 25, 2005, Dayton area Delphi workers and supporters are holding a “March for Jobs.” The event will start at the Veteran’s Memorial on Veteran’s Parkway and will end at the UAW local 696 Union Hall at 1543 Alwildy Avenue. The parade will stage at 11:30am at the Veteran’s Memorial, which is located at the northwest corner of Stewart Street and Patterson Boulevard. At noon the marchers will proceed across the Stewart Street bridge on a 1.5 mile walk to the UAW hall.

The “March for Jobs” is intended as a show of unity and support for Dayton area Delphi plants and those whose jobs are currently being threatened by the Delphi bankruptcy proposals. The route will take participants past the barren, eleven-acre concrete slab which was the former Delphi-Wisconsin Boulevard site.

At the UAW Hall, there will be a rally featuring several guest speakers, including United States Senate Candidate Paul Hackett, who will keynote the event.
